SINGAPORE — Self-described “bedroom rockers” Foc Fashion just dropped their second single of the year “Baloney” on December 13. The brand new track is now available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

Originally from Cebu City, Philippines, Foc Fashion consists of original members Mark Sy on vocals and guitars and Miguel Saballa on drums alongside the most recent addition, Mathew Wong, on bass. Prior to the release of “Baloney”, the band had dropped “Space” in September of the same year, pleasantly surprising long-time fans and capturing the attention of a new generation of audiences alike.

Like “Space”, “Baloney” may sound familiar to fans of the band who had frequented live performances of the band. “‘Baloney’ was first written back in 2015,” Sy shares. At the time it was first written, the band had Martino Olvido on guitars and Erwin Batucan on bass, in addition to Sy and Saballa.

“The version we’ve recorded now is a fresh take reimagined by the current lineup,” he adds.

For this version, the band also brought in keyboardist Danny Brown to round up the track’s arrangement. Brown, a multi-instrumentalist from bands such as Deadtooth and Hot Dish, was a friend of Saballa as they were both into tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. “He jammed with us last year for one gig before moving back to the USA.”

This is a labor of love—we just want to share our music.

Mark Sy, on what motivates the band

Brown gladly said yes when the band asked him to join the recording for “Baloney” and the rest, as they say, is history.

On the track’s theme, Sy describes it as “about the struggles of turbulent attachment”. The serious subject matter contrasts nicely with Foc Fashion’s signature danceable indie rock stylings, which shines through in the new track.

The release of “Baloney” caps off a productive comeback year for the Singapore-based band. As for what the future holds, putting out an album is definitely in the stars but the band’s members are set on going through the process at a comfortable pace.

“This is a labor of love—we just want to share our music. If someone out there connects with it, that’s just the cherry on top.”
