ILIGAN CITY, PHILIPPINES — Alternative rock band FatherGore has just released the second of their two-song series for October 2024 with But What Is, a chilling ballad, going live on all major streaming platforms since October 31.
“But What Is”, along with the preceding single “We of the While“, was recorded more than a decade earlier in Cebu’s legendary Backyard Project Studios with its renowned sound engineer Kerryl Demeterio. This, however, is the first time that the track has been released to digital streaming platforms, after updates to the arrangement were made by guitarist and chief composer Brando Bartolome. Remastering was also done by producer Micmic Pacalioga.
As Bartolome revealed, the release of the two-song series was spurred by a health incident experienced by vocalist Alexis Lasmarias which forced the band members to grapple with the thought of mortality. Thankfully, he pulled through and, according to Bartolome, “the first thing he wanted to do was re-record the old songs and write new ones.”
Musically, “But What Is” is a piece of 90s nostalgia, evoking tones and familiarity from the golden age of alternative music but with FatherGore’s signature dark and occult influence adding its unique flavor to the song, making it a suitable soundtrack to the Halloween season. The Lasmarias-penned lyrics, on the other hand, question traditional notions of “love” and echo alternative views on the concept.
While there are no immediate plans in FatherGore’s stars following this series of releases, it is safe to say that the band is far from done and the future for the band is currently an open book for which their listeners can be excited about.
